Happy Canada Day: 5 Fun Facts

Canada Day Point2 Agent

Happy Canada Day to our dear readers! We’re taking the day off (along with most of the rest of the country), and hope you are too. But just in case you’re looking for a little light reading, here are 5 fun facts about Canada Day that you might not know:

1. Canada Day was originally called Dominion Day, right up until 1982.

2. Colour TV was first introduced to Canada on July 1, 1966, at the beginning of Canada’s 100th year as a nation.

3. “O Canada” became the official national anthem on July 1, 1980. That means that when we hosted the Olympics in 1976, our anthem was not-yet-but-kind-of-almost official.

4. Canada Day is pretty much in the exact middle of the year. It’s day 182, after that there are just 183 days left to go.

5. In Quebec, you may hear this day referred to as ‘Moving Day.’ That’s because in 1973, the Quebec government decided new leases should begin on this day, instead of May 1st as was previously mandated. Now it is more of a tradition than a legal requirement. You can read more about the history of Moving Day here
