Competitive Pricing Product Updates Part 2: Schedulable Discounts, Flash Sales

Discounting is a key element within a retailer’s pricing strategy. In the first part of this series, we introduced you to three discount rules which could be used as part of a pricing strategy for the upcoming 2015 holiday shopping season. In this second part of the series, we’ll be discussing one feature enhancement the Bigcommerce product team has rolled out across all of our discount rules: the ability to schedule discounts and run flash sales.

When we initially set out to perform custom research, we didn’t expect to hear that our clients were staying awake to 11:59 p.m. to manually start their Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales. That’s an unacceptable manual process, and so we introduced a new scheduling ability for all discount rules. Going forward, discounts can be scheduled in advance, so no merchant need to wait until the minute to ensure a discount campaign goes live when needed.

Here is how it works.

New Scheduling Fields

Previously, our product featured an “Expiry date,” which allowed you to determine when a designated discount would end. We’ve now complemented this with a “Start date,” which allows you to set a discount to automatically kick-start on any particular day. You can set that date to be at another time today, at daybreak of tomorrow or, if you want to really be proactive, three months from now in time for Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the rest of the holiday sales.

Flash Sales

With the increased popularity of flash sale sites including Hautelook, Joss & Main Ideeli and Gilte, we’ve heard a desire from Bigcommerce clients to be able to feasible, scalably and reliably run flash sales themselves. Have some excess products which you want to clear out quickly? This is just another tool which you can use to drive sales and better compete in the quickly evolving ecommerce industry.

We’ve officially rolled out this “Start time” and “End time” feature functionality, which will allow you to create flash sales by the hour.

All of this work is to ensure our merchants have the necessary tools to outcompete their competition and scale their businesses. In the final post of this series, we’ll be covering how free shipping and bulk purchasing rules now apply to our built-in discount options. Stay tuned!
