Title: Software Developer
Started at Point2: January 2015
It might seem like Hemant is fairly new at Point2, but in reality he’s quite a veteran. Hemant originally started at Point2 in 2005, but left in 2012 to pursue a different opportunity. We were happy to welcome him back this year when he returned to join our parent company’s YES team as a developer.
When he’s not busy writing code, well, he pretty much does it all. He’s built his own home theater, has a wedding photography business, and owns a lingerie store with his wife. With two little boys under the age of 5, we’re not sure how he manages to fit it all in!
We asked Hemant to answer a few questions about himself. Here’s what he had to say:
What is your favorite movie of all time?
This is a question I am often asked, and one that I don’t think I can answer because there’s no way I could narrow it down to just one. I love a lot of films and hold a small group in my “favorites of all time” list. The Star Wars franchise is very dear to my heart and was the first one added to my list. Other examples of my favorites are Alien, Aliens, Children of Men, City of God, Drive, West Side Story, E.T., and JFK. Oh yeah, and The Goonies. I can’t forget the Goonies.
If you have an hour of free time to spare, what do you do with it?
Having two boys under the age of 5 means I’m tired all of the time. If I can get an hour or so of free time I definitely try and sneak in a nap, or just relax and watch a movie.
What kinds of food do you like?
I truly love food, and have no real preference, but I do tend to steer towards the spicier fare. I also am always on the lookout for outstanding burgers, and could probably eat pizza everyday if that was an acceptable lifestyle choice.
What are the words you live by?
– “I am because we are.”
– I believe that everyone can have a great life if we all work together, and give a hand to those who need a little help.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
A film director.
What was your last Do It Yourself project?
I built a dedicated home theater in our basement. As a movie guy I love the theater experience, but became really discouraged by other patrons who were disruptive or insisted on using their mobile phones during a movie. I figured I’d just build my own and not have to worry about it anymore. I documented the build process here.
What online sites do you visit?
I’m fairly active on Twitter and Facebook. These seem to be the best mediums for real time updates as to what’s going on in the world. I know a lot of people like to marginalize Facebook, but I’m a big fan. I love being able to connect with people that I haven’t seen in 20 years and get glimpses into their lives. Other than the social media side, I also spend a lot of time on political news sites.
What athlete or sports figure do you most admire?
LeBron James. This guy does not quit, no matter what obstacles are in front of him, and has a level of talent that we have not seen in a long time or for that matter, ever. Despite his success, money, and celebrity status, he’s led a scandal-free life, and has been an upstanding member of society. If the worst thing we can say he’s done is hold an ill-advised TV special to announce he’s leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers, he’s doing something right.
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Probably invisibility. I think you could be a pretty lethal superhero if you could move wherever you wanted without being noticed.
What are some things on your bucket list?
– Witness a total solar eclipse.
– Sit courtside at an NBA game.
– Make a short film.
– Eat an authentic Philly Cheesesteak at Pat’s King of Steaks
What is something about you that few people know?
I have a wedding photography business that allows me to exercise the artistic side of my brain outside of my 9 to 5 job. It keeps me busy and lets me work with some really lovely couples in Saskatoon. Oh, and I also own a lingerie store with my wife.
